New European Designers

We all know the great names that transformed the exclusive craftsmanship of making clothes into an admired art form, readily available to the masses with the prêt-à-porter collections. Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Gianni Versace, and even Erling Persson, the founder of H&M, just to name a few, were all Europeans, who had built their celebrated careers on talent and hard work (and a little financial help from the lovers in Coco’s case, but we will leave that aside).Dior New Look collection 1947

But what about the next generation? The aspiring designers of the 21st century? Perhaps I read the wrong magazines, but young designers do not receive nearly as much attention as they deserve. Of course, I love me some Prada or Dolce & Gabanna, but the famous designers seem to become so repetitive. I find the artistic independence of young designers so refreshing.

All these reasons along with the desire to support my fellow young Europeans have inspired me to create this index of young fashion designers and brands from all parts of Europe. I was particularly inspired by Jenny Collicott, a young Londoner whose novel sense of style I find absolutely ingenious.

My favourite pieces from Jenny Collicott London

Jenny Collicott is a printed textile designer. After having graduated with an honours degree in textile design in 2012, she has immediately set up her business, using the skills she had acquired during her studies, the internship at Christopher Kane, and other part-time jobs. Her design aesthetics combine the traditional Britishness (tea, anyone?) with the quirky exoticness. She was influenced by the latter during her travels to the Far East.

I am utterly in love with the elaborate patterns of Jenny’s artwork. She is certainly not just a fashion designer, but an extremely talented artist. You can shop her designs worldwide at Niiche.
